This marks the second movie Will Ferrell has starred in where an actor who was a member of the "Corleone family" (of The Godfather) has played his father. In Elf, James Caan (who had played Sonny Corleone) played his father. In this movie, Robert Duvall (who had played Tom Hagen) plays Buck Weston, Phil's father.
The music in the scene where Ferrell is trying out for the track team is the same music played during his gymnastics scene in Old School which also starred Ferrell.
The long haired blonde member of the Gladiators team has 'Appatow' on his jersey, most likely in reference to executive producer Judd Apatow.
